| Deerskin Drum The frame drum of the native people of the west coast of Canada is found in a variety of sizes. Common to many of the peoples of the coastal and inland regions, this was an important instrument used in a variety of rituals and dances. The drum is made from either a single piece of wood bent into a circle or frame, or from a number of pieces pieced together to form the frame. Traditionally deer skin is stretched over the top, although now goat skin is also common. These drums are not usually tuned, and often accompany singing and dancing. A common rhythm found throughout the west coast referred to as the heart rhythm" is said to imitate both the human heart and the heartbeat of Mother Earth.
